3rd and Final Assignment ðŸ˜:
Hi! This will be the final SSR review! For my final book, I will be reading and reviewing Dear Martin by Nic Stone! We are definitely closing this out with a bang!
Dear Martin by Nic Stone centers around Justyce McAllister, a teenager trying to make it past high school and into college, as he faces racism, loses friends, and has girl problems. In the beginning of the book, Justyce passes as a normal teenager, but when he goes to help his drunk ex-girlfriend(who is white), he gets arrested and accused of hijacking the car, which helps him start to see clearly. After the event, he starts to see how racism is everywhere, from his friend's friends spitting out racial slurs, to going to a friend's house and seeing black face pictures on the walls. He started to write letters to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he addressed the letters to 'Martin'. He is determined to get through high school and fight racism, but it's hard when your white friends say that the world has already achieved equality and you are just complaining for no reason. This book will take you through Justyce's life and will definitely make you cry.
The book does include a lot of cussing and a few sexual references(nothing explicit), so if you are uncomfortable with that, I would recommend waiting to read this book. The demographic of Dear Martin is probably 15-18, so it was a bit mature for me.
I rank this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book was absolutely amazing and I would recommend this to anyone and everyone of age. Nic Stone did an amazing job in attaching the reader to the characters, and the character arcs of the side characters, such as Manny and Jared, were heartbreaking and meaningful. It also shocked me to the reality of racism. I do support Black Lives Matter and would consider myself educated on the topic, but even all the reading in the world could not have prepared me for this. It deals with utter racism, such as people saying the n-word, which is an extremely racist slur, police brutality, and racist stereotypes. It really educated me about the hardships of being a minority, which is a big reason why I rated this book so highly. Every time something racist what said or done to the character, I felt like throwing my Kindle across my room, which I would say is what the author intended. The dialogue was very insightful as well.
One quote that I found very thought-provoking was song lyrics from the singer Deuce Diggs, who is fictional. The quote is:
"Turn on the news, another black man slain,
They say "It's okay. Save your voice, don't complain.
This isn't about race, so stop using that excuse.
Now look at this funny picture of Obama in a noose!
See how color-blind we are? You're really not black to me.
Underneath, where it matters, we both bleed red, you see?
So put away that race card; it ain't 1962.
There's no more segregation...isn't that enough for you?"(Stone, 156)
This quote is extremely significant because it shows the main character, Justyce's, thoughts on racism through Deuce Diggs. The quote shows how many white privileged people wave away the thought that black deaths are not about race and that segregation was the only type of discrimination. It shows how privileged white people really are and how that there is still so much more to until equality is achieved.
That is it for my thoughts on Dear Martin! Someone on my last post recommended I put a video in that summarizes the book as well, so here it is!

2nd Assignment:
Hello everyone! I'm back with another SSR Book Review! For my second book, I will be reviewing Early Departures by Justin A. Reynolds!
Early Departures by Justin A. Reynolds centers around Jamal, who is an orphan living with his pregnant sister. We also meet Quincy, a.k.a. Q, Jamal's former best friend at a party where they reunite for the first time in years. Sadly, it isn't all fun and games when they confront each other. They end up getting into a fight and Jamal is convinced he won't talk to Q ever again. Then, the unexpected happens. Trying to be a hero, Q dies saving a girl who almost drowned. But what if...he gets a second chance? Read Early Departures to find out what happens!
*This summary does not contain spoilers! All of this information can be found in the first few pages of the book!
I rank this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The reason I rank this book so highly is because Justin A. Reynolds does a phenomenal job attaching the reader to the characters. Throughout the book, you get emotionally attached to both Jamal and Quincy making the book an extremely pleasant experience. The reason why I took off half a point from the score is because in certain parts of the story, I got uninterested and some chapters just felt like filler chapters that are trying to connect one point to another. This wasn't for the entire book, though. What I liked most in the book were the characters and how they were all flawed in ways that everyone is, but their flaws did not make them any less likable. What I liked the least about the book were some of the filler chapters that were a bit uninteresting if you ask me. They put me in a reading slump sometimes which is why it took me so long to finish the book. Usually, with a three hundred fifty-page book like this one, I tear through it, but I took about 3 days to finish this. Also, this is a good time to mention that this book is extremely mature, with countless cuss words and several sexual references(even if they are not explicitly stated) so make sure you keep this in mind before you read this book.
A quote from the book that I believe will help you decide whether or not you want to read this book(if you're not already convinced) is,
"And I suppose the story moral is: You can die and still live on. You can be alive but be consumed by death. The difference between living and being alive is: Everything." (Reynolds, 318)
I picked this quote because it tells you about the morals of this story. It also is quite insightful and leaves you with something to think about as I conclude this post, which is on-brand for my blog, isn't it? It is significant in the book because it shows Jamal coming to terms with the events of the book as he analyzes what happened. This was essential to the betterment of Jamal's mental health because it helped him get over the events healthily.
That's all for my review for Early Departures! Thanks for reading!

1st Assignment:
Note: You may have seen that I had started on my summary for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but I decided to abandon ship on that because a lot is going on in that book so it would be difficult to write a brief summary. Thanks!
Hello! This is my first SSR assignment! For my first book, I will be reviewing Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes!
Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes is about an African American boy named Jerome who is shot by a police officer in an impoverished Chicago neighborhood because he had a toy gun that was given to him by his friend, Carlos. The book switches between 2 time periods: before he was killed when he was alive, and after he was killed when he came back as a ghost. The before chapters provide in-depth explanations of things that are referenced in the ghost chapters as well as stories of how he got bullied, and his new friendship with Carlos, a poor Mexican who is new to the school they go to. As a ghost, Jerome meets Emmett Till who was also killed because of his race, and Sarah, the police officer's "white" daughter, who Jerome helps find out that his killing was rooted in racism as his case gets taken through the court.
I rank this book a 5 out of 5 stars. I ranked this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is written well in a way that keeps my interest for the entirety of the book. I also think this book is important for everyone to read so they can be educated about racism and police brutality. My favorite part, or the thing I liked the most about this book, is that it is very educational about a topic that is very important and has been for a while, police brutality, and racism. I feel it describes and states why many police brutality cases are rooted in racism. It is also very insightful about this topic. My least favorite part, or the thing I liked the least about this book, is that there is not a clear ending. Some people may like this, however, as it comes off as meaningful, but I wanted to know what happened to Jerome after the events of the book. I may have liked an epilogue, but alas, there isn't one, so the reader is left to wonder. Again, some people might like this, I just personally do not.
A quote from the book that I believe will help you decide whether or not you want to read this book is in the chapter Day of the Dead, where it says, ""At least until there aren't any more murders," answers Emmett. "Until skin color doesn't matter. Only friendship. Kindness. Understanding." "Peace." That's my wish, too."(Rhodes, Chapter 38). I picked this quote because it is meaningful and gives you something to think about as I leave you. Racism is a major issue, especially right now with the Black Lives Matter protests taking place earlier this year.
Note: My online copy of the book does not have page numbers which are why I used the chapter for the citation! That's it for my review of Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes! Please comment to give feedback and constructive criticism! Thanks!

Ok, first of all, that was probably the best book review I have read so far! I remember that I really enjoyed watching the movie The Hate U Give which was based of the book with the same name, and these have pretty similar plots so there is a mini book recommendation for you! You really captivated me and I low-key wanna read his book now! Thank you so mach for this gem of a review, and keep up that writing, cause you sure are insightful!
ReplyDeleteThanks! OMG I love the book The Hate U Give! It's not really school appropriate though..I've never watched the movie! I'll make sure to read it. Thanks for reviewing!
DeleteWow meant WATCH it...

DeleteHi! This is a very good book review. I like how you connect the book to some of the things that are happening right now like the Black Lives Matter protest. "Ghost Boys" seems like a very interesting book and I might read it! Great book review!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThis post is SO good! It makes me really want to read the book, but therre are also no major spoilers that upset me! And I also respect your values and the quote you chose, I think black lives do matter, and I am glad you think this too.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I most definitely support Black Lives Matter! I also love the quote! Jewell Parker Rhodes is an AMAZING writer! Thanks for commenting!
DeleteGreat job on your book review. You really hooked me into it. I'm gonna read that book ANY chance I get. Keep up the good work!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm glad you want to read this book!

ReplyDeleteHey Ivanka!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, your book review sounded so professional and you chose just the right words to hit your audience with the "Oh this girl knows her stuff" kind of vibe.
Second, I L-O-V-E how you tied this in with the Black Lives Matter protest, because that's so true, and we need to fix that! I'm dying to read Ghost Boys now!
Now what I liked about your review-
Like I said before, you had really amazing language for the summary and review overall. The quote was awesome, and I totally understand your feelings about being kept entertained for the whole book, AND your thoughts about the fact that there was no Epilogue.
(I find it really hard to criticize books, so kudos for that!!)
Bye now,

ReplyDeleteHi Ivanka! This review is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Even though it was so detailed you didn't spoil a thing. I love how this was so professional! I love it! The summary is amazing and I would really like to read Ghost Boys. I love how you tied this review to what's happening now (Black Lives Matter). The quote was amazing and really relates to everything that is going on in your review. Keep Writing!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI will read this book in the near future. I love how you connected the book to real life matter that are happening now.

ReplyDeleteI absoulutely love all the BLM awarenemss in your book and in your review. Considering how the main character is black man and he's de@d, I can tell how this isn't a book of just some person with this white savior complex. As you said, it brings acknowledgement to police brutality and I hope to read this so I can educate myself even further of the predjudice happening towards POC. I littlerly can't think of any constructive ciritcism, this review is so good in several ways!
ReplyDeleteFor sure! Thanks!
DeleteThis book is great for BLM and also great job on giving us the right amount of what happened in this book. I agree with you because I like when books have a clear ending.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Just to clarify, the ending fits the book, but I would have liked to know what happened after the events of the book. Sorry if I made that unclear. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteHi Ivanka!
ReplyDeleteWhat an insightful book blog! I've read this book before and I love the way you made it appealing and exciting for potential readers. I also like how you honestly stated your opinions and qualities people may like or may not like. I also enjoyed how you made the connections from the book to the real world, which was awesome! I've never thought about connecting the book to today's events (to be fair, I read the book before this crazy year happened). Nice job!
Hey Charissa!
DeleteThanks1 I did try to shine light on this book in the best possible way while still acknowledging its shortcomings. I connected it to BLM, which is not explicitly stated in the book, although there are references to it. I think if you read this book for the first time this year, it would make a much bigger impact then it would years prior.
Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts!
I love how you connected this book to events that are happening now. Your summary was really detailed, but you didn't give away any spoilers, and the quote you chose was really meaningful. I also like the way you gave your opinion without being biased. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I did try to make it as reader friendly as possible. I also had to try really hard not to be biased. To be honest, it was a struggle, so I'm glad you thought I did well. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteOk, LOVED your review, once again! Early Departures seems like such a good book and I love that the summary gave enough of the book away for me to want to read it, but not too much to where you spoiled anything. I also love the quote you chose from the book, it's very beautiful and sad, but true. Very insightful review! I loved it, and I just wished that maybe there were some kind of book trailer or video, but even without it, amazing review. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It really is an amazing book. I also enjoyed the quote. Next time, I'll try to look for a book trailer. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteHow are your reviews always so good? You do a very good job on clearly explaining what goes on in this book. Also, thanks for warning us on any content that might not be appropriate, we always appreciate that :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing job!!!
Lol thanks!
DeleteHi Ivanka! This is so far probably the best book review I have every read. I love how you were so detailed in you review without spoiling anything because no one likes spoilers you know! You ranking explanation is really descriptive and your quote is amazing! Really good job! I rank your review 5 out of 5 stars! Great Job! I would really like to read this book after reading this review! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHey! Thank you so much!

ReplyDeleteHey Ivanka!
I accidentally deleted my other comment which I was drafting, so . . . Take 2!
First of all, thank you for having the courage to directly and straightforwardly list that the book had minimal content and "countless" language. I get really shy whenever I have to list that "content warning", so I'm going to give you all the blogging points for this! Thanks!
Secondly, thank you for mentioning filler chapters! I've read books like that and halfway get bored and end up not finishing it or finishing it after a while (😂) so this is really helpful!
Third: quote. The quote is so deep, and I was like looking at it still after I read it. It's so insightful and significantly leaves a mark on you after you read it. The reasoning for it is amazing as well!
Fourth thing: The likes and dislikes! I don't see this on a lot of blogs because people miss them, and I love that you listed what you liked and disliked because that gives readers an honest view on what they should expect!
Fifth (and last) thing: THE CLIFFHANGER ON THE SUMMARY, I- gosh, I mean, more blogging points to you for making it appealing to the reader, but also bad for me because now I HAVE to know what happens! (!!!)
Overall, the review was very crisp and clean, and I now have a new book checked out on Sora: Early Departures! (Guess that means I won't have to wait long to figure out what happens! Haha!)
OMG, thank you! You wrote so much!
DeleteThis is an amazing book review. Even though it was short (I'm commenting on Early Departures), it was insightful, just like the name of your blog! I like how you were honest with how you rated the boook, but the best part for me was the quote. It really does give you something to think about, and it seems like it ties perfectly to the story, even when I haven't read it!!
ReplyDeleteEdit: I also like your wording when you said: "But what if...he gets a second chance?"
DeleteThank you so much!
DeleteEarly departures
ReplyDeleteThis review is very good because you made sure to give no spoilers about the book. I think that it would have been more creative to not use what was written in the first few chapters but use other parts also, over all you did a good job.!
Hello! Thanks for your feedback! I think if I had used some of the other parts, it would have spoiled the entire book, which is why I chose to only include that much. Thanks for your feedback!
DeleteHey, Ivanka!
ReplyDeleteThis is a bit late, but Early Departures seems like a really great book!
*adding it to my tbr list* Since the author did a good job of attaching you to the characters I’m really excited but also a bit nervous to read it—
Hi! It really is a great book! To be honest you should be nervous-
DeleteStill read it though!
Dear Martin
ReplyDeleteHello! I like your review on Dear Martin and I like how descriptive you were of it. I was first overwhelmed by your book review (in a good way 😄) but then I started reading it and I liked it a lot and because I read your review on Dear Martin I will definitely read the book now. Thank you for introducing the book to me and everyone else who reads this post!
Edit: It is very DEEP as well
DeleteHello Rishik! Thank you! I'm sorry you felt overwhelmed at the beginning. I love that you are going to read the book and it was my pleasure to introduce it to y'all!
DeleteDear Martin
ReplyDeleteHey! I love your review and it is super descriptive you were. The book review summarized the whole book up in a way without spoilers, just how we all like it! It's really good and I'm glad that I read this book review. I was really needing a book to read next. Thanks for introducing it to us! I'm definitely read it!
Thank you! Sorry for replying so late. I'm glad you liked my review, and it's always my pleasure to introduce new books to y'all! Have a great rest of your summer!
DeleteI really liked how you explained how important this book is to tell and show how bad racism is still here and not getting much better but I one thing I have to say you could improve is putting each blog post into separate posts not one giant sprawling post
ReplyDeleteThank you! I did try and use my book review to condemn racism, so I'm glad you picked up on it. Sorry about having all 3 of my book reviews in one page; Blogger doesn't allow multiple posts under one page, or if it does, I haven't figured it out yet. Have a great rest of your summer!
DeleteYou did a good job not spoiling what happens in these books. But you could separate the posts.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Sorry about having all 3 of my book reviews in one page; Blogger doesn't allow multiple posts under one page, or if it does, I haven't figured it out yet. Have a great rest of your summer!
DeleteYou should separate the posts to make finding the assignments and comments easier but I really liked it! I liked how you added the trailer, too.
ReplyDeleteHey Ivanka, your book review on Dear Martin was amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou told us all your opinions on it, with an honest book review.
I really enjoyed the part where you mentioned how even with all the learning and researching you've done about Black Lives Matter and racism, you still have much to learn, and personally, that surprised me, since you're so up-to-date with all the BLM happening in our community.
I also love the quote. I strongly believe that skin color doesn't matter and usually use that phrase "we all bleed the same color" whenever I talk about or mention racism. The quote really connected the book to real life right now, where so many incidents happen today because of racism. It really connected with me, and it was definitely a great, meaningful quote to pick.
I've already mentioned this before, but thank you for warning us about the "content" and swearing with a content warning and personal age rating! I find these really important to book reviews so you prepare the readers before they dive in!
The summary was brilliant too! I totally see how someone going through that could have a real change in the way he sees things, and the way you presented it really makes me want to read it!
One thing I would add on: maybe a bit more about the letters, especially since the book is called Dear Martin; I would've liked a little more on that.
Overall, amazing book review!
Hey! Thank you so much for all of feedback! Now that I look back on this post, I also think I should have expanded upon the letters, so thank you for bringing that to my attention. Sorry for replying to your comment so late, and have a great rest of your summer!
Delete:0 I love all your book reviews that you've done! I'll be sure to check Dear, Martin out!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
